EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
