The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Romance
Throughout this animated journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting baby teeth of slumbering children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.
An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people together. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, prone to stealing whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.
Naturally, such a setup needs a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
There aren’t all that many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever teenagers view these days in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
